The 6 Step Marketing Strategy for Small Business Success
Twelve years ago, with two young children, I gave up full time work in accounting to start up a bookkeeping business. I printed up business cards and placed ads in the local papers, but never found enough clients for my business to prosper. I was fortunate that I had a husband who was bringing in an income and I wasn’t paying for bricks and mortar business. Still, when I returned to full-time work within a year I was told some horrific statistics:
The Australian Bureau of Statistics state that up to 60% of small businesses fail in the first three years, and over 30% within the first year.
This knowledge, that I was part of such a large statistic, did not make me feel better. In fact I felt worse. It was this statistic that set me on the path to become a small business marketer, and to formulate a plan, the 6 step marketing strategy for small business success.
So you ask, what are the 6 steps to small business success and how can I narrow it down to only six?
Well, there are many more steps to ensure any business succeeds, but the six steps I am presenting ensure that, if a small business were to fail, it is not from lack of the right marketing.
When you choose to go in to business for yourself, it is with the intent of providing goods or services to others based on what you enjoy doing, are good at, and/or specialise in. There is also usually an altruistic element, with your intent is to improve the lives of others by providing them with a result. Unfortunately this ability to do what you love does not necessary come with a marketing map to ensure that your message gets to your ideal customer. Instead, you are possibly more focussed on doing what you do best, hoping that is enough. Unfortunately you can get lost amongst the competition, or lack exposure, especially when in the start-up phase.
